Kendari, SE Sulawesi, March 30,  Antara Sultra - State owned port operator Kepala Pelindo IV of Kendari branch said construction of the Kendari New Port on the island of Bungkutoko, Southeast Sulawesi, will start in April.

"God willing work would start in April to build the Kendari New Port," Suparman, head of the company said here on Thursday.

He said the pillars of the port quay already arrived here from Surabaya last week.

Pelindo IV has set aside Rp936 billion in budget for the project including Rp635 billion as state capital participation and Rp301 billion in internal capital of the company.

In the first phase, a special quay of container terminal with a capacity of 250,000 TEUS per year, will be built over a 5 hectare plot of land of 85 hectares of land prepared for the project.

"The new port would better facilitate shipments to and from the region . The existing port in Kendari, Nusantara Kendari, could no longer be revitalized to accommodate large ships," Suparman said.

The project is part of the government program of expanding sea toll especially in eastern regions of the country.
