Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, Nov 6 (Antara) - Around 200 experts will discuss living matters in the Wakatobi waters of Southeast Sulawesi in an international seminar from Nov 11 to 13.

The seminar will be held in Wangiwangi, the capital city of the regency of Wakatobi of the Southeast Sulawesi province, an official said on Wednesday.

Wakatobi Regent Hugua said the Wakatobi waters has 750 of 850 known types of ridge of rock in the world.

For comparison, Hugua said "in the Red Sea there are only 300 kinds of ridge of rocks and the Caribbean Sea, which is often visited by many world class divers, has only 50 kinds of ridge of rock.

He also said the seabed of the Wakatobi waters is the habitat for 942 fish species and various kinds of other marine biota.

The high variety of fauna and flora is the reason for holding the international seminar in Wakatobi, he said.

In 20912, the Wakatobi waters was named an Earth Biosphere Nature Preserve by Unesco, and earlier in 1996, the Indonesian government officially named a 1.5 hectares of the Wakatobi waters a National Marine Park .

"It was named a National Marine Park as in addition to the high variety of its fauna and flora , the natural beauty of the seabed is fantastic and amazing," Hugua said.

Representatives of 20 donor agencies from various countries known to be consistent in fighting for the preservation of the environment are expected to attend the seminar.

In addition, around 40 heads of district administrations and city mayors from Asia Pacific countries are also invited to the seminar.

The heads of district administration and city mayors are invited by the organizing committee as they are the policy makers in district areas, Hugua said.

"They are responsible for preserving and protecting the environment," he said.

The results of the seminar would be recommended to the heads of state in Asia Pacific to be considered in their policy in exploiting the environment, he said.
