Kendari, S. E. Sulawesi, June 27 (Antara) -- The government of Wakatobi district in South East Sulawesi province has built a special pier for luxury ships to attract tourists interested in the sport of diving, a state official said.
"We prepared the Dermaga Marina as a special pier where luxury ships can anchor at Wakatobi Port," District Head of Wakatobi Hugua said here on Saturday.
Earlier, only some 50 luxury ships were able to dock at the special pier.
"This year, the Wakatobi government has set a target of attracting as many as 17,000 tourists, which is 2,000 higher than that recorded the previous year," Hugua pointed out.
The special pier for luxury ships in Wakatobi will contribute substantial revenue to the coffers of the district government because every ship anchoring at the pier will be charged some US$50 per day.
Foreign tourists visit Wakatobi when there is a convoy of yachts to enliven the Sail Indonesia program, which is held from August to October every year, he stated.
