Kendari, SE Sulawesi, Oct 30 (Antara) - A tectonic earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter Scale jolted Kendari on Sunday at 12:42 p.m local time (GMT+8).
According to Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 3.86 degrees of Southern Latitude and 122.34 degrees of Eastern Longitude or 28 km west of Kendari District, Southeast Sulawesi, at a depth of 10 km.
"The earthquake has no potential to trigger a tsunamo," Head of BMKG of Kendari Rosa Amelia said here on Sunday.
Amelia stated that the earthquake was felt in several regions apart from Kendari such as Sambuli, Lambo, Ammusu, Awoliki and Tambua.
Local residents were reported rushing out of their homes during the earthquake.
Amelia said that the earthquake was categorized as a shallow earthquake due to the activity of Lawanopo fault.
The Lawanopo fault is a sinistral strike-slip fault stretching 260 km from the north of Malili to Tanjung Toronipa.
The northwestern tip of the fault meets the Matano fault, while the southeastern tip of Lawanopo fault crosses the Tolo Thrust.
The fault is called Lawanopo since the fault splits the Lawanopo plain, Amelia said, adding that the fault remains active nowadays.
